The organizers of the Fresh Start grocery cooperative are currently collecting stock subscriptions from potential members. They gathered their first subscriptions during a public meeting at the Geraldine School on May 24. The sale of co-op stock enables the Fresh Start steering committee to raise capital and build ownership in the emerging grocery business.
During the meeting, the organizers presented cost estimates for building options, needed equipment, and the initial grocery inventory. Several different buildings in Geraldine are being considered as possible locations for the new food co-op. A future board of directors elected by co-op member-owners will make the final decision on a location.
Those serving on the steering committee feel a grocery store is needed to serve local residents who currently are forced to travel at least 30 miles to buy their groceries. In addition to raising funds through stock subscriptions, the organizers are seeking additional funding through public donations and special grants.
