The Montana Cooperative Development Center (MCDC) will host a public information meeting about forming a cooperative on Friday, May 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Monarch-Neihart Community Center. A group of local citizens is exploring the idea of starting a co-op to buy the Neihart Inconvenience Store. Current owners, Royal and Nancy Westerveldt, like the idea since they no longer have the time necessary to run the business.

The Westerveldts first opened the store in 2008, stocking it with essential items for all who reside and pass through Neihart. The store has also become a popular place for people to grab a beverage, chat and meet for community events. During the summer months, the store has hosted several Saturday evening community pot lucks. These events have united the very diverse community of full and part-time residents.

At the meeting, attendees will learn how a cooperative is organized, governed and operated in Montana. Representatives from MCDC will explain the process of forming a cooperative and the important roles of its member-owners. Attendees also will be asked if they are interested in participating on a steering committee to further explore a cooperative.
