GREAT FALLS, Montana – The Montana Cooperative Development Center (MCDC) welcomes Eric Bergman as the organization’s new Program Specialist.  Bergman, who served as a Cooperative Development Specialist in the past, moves into the new contracted position of Program Specialist in November 2019.  MCDC is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization whose mission is to promote and develop cooperatives to meet the economic and community needs of rural Montana.

Bergman grew up in Great Falls, Montana, and earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in biology and science education, respectively, both from the University of Montana in Missoula.  His work experience is diverse and includes biological field and lab research, teaching, education program management, community water system operations, lobbying in the state legislature, and business development focused on food, agriculture, and cooperatives.  In 2009, Eric initiated a first-generation diversified farm emphasizing biological, regenerative practices and community engagement.

“The farming sector has a distinct history of utilizing the cooperative model.  The historical functions of co-ops in agriculture are still applicable, and exciting new concepts and models are emerging,” Bergman explained.  He added, “This is true for co-ops beyond the food and farming sectors, of course.  In this position, I intend to explore, highlight, and help apply the cooperative structure where it can facilitate true benefit for people.”

“If you’ll humor the 30,000-foot view:  Intentional, justice-oriented cooperation is fundamental to who we are as human beings.  As an organizational structure, a business cooperative can lend itself to economic efficiency while also integrating other values such as democratic decision-making,” said Bergman.

MCDC Executive Director Tracy McIntyre expressed, “Based on his education, experience, and passion for farming, Eric brings much expertise from the agricultural sector to our Center.  Here at MCDC, we are all excited to have Eric on board with our team.”

Spending ample time with his son, Leif, and time outside on the farm and in the natural world are among Eric’s other priorities.
